Fear of Failure|5 ways to overcome the fear of failure and take action

Failure isn't always a bad thing. In fact, it can be one of the best things that happen to you if you let it. Many successful people have failed numerous times before they found success. However, many people also let their fear of failure hold them back from reaching their goals.

Hi, my name is Felecia Etienne, and I am a Certified High-Performance Success Coach and Business and Life Strategist for 42% ambitious female entrepreneurs and professionals. I help those overwhelmed, stressed-out bosses maximize their time, energy, and productivity so they can be present and intentional with the vital aspects of their life.

Here are five ways to overcome the fear of failure and take action:

1. Shift your perspective about failure

If you want to be a successful woman entrepreneur or leader, you absolutely must shift your perspective on what failure means and does NOT mean. Failure is not the opposite of success; it IS one form of success. If you aren't failing every now and then, you're not trying hard enough. Not only that, but if something didn’t go wrong with your business or career, you wouldn't learn how to do it right next time. So whenever you fail, embrace the opportunity to learn something new and ask yourself: What can I do differently next time?

2. Take action despite fear of failure

It's very common for women to want to avoid failure at all costs, but that can become self-defeating. When you take action despite the fear of failure, you grow your confidence and move closer toward success. So what if things don't work out? At least you tried! Try these two simple actions whenever you're feeling overwhelmed by fear: Breathe deeply in through your nose and breathe out through your mouth. Repeat this action for 3 to 5 minutes, then take small steps toward what you need to do next.

3. Evaluate where the fear is coming from

When you're bracing yourself for something difficult or uncomfortable, it's important to understand why. Underneath these feelings are usually expectations of how things "should" be. When you can identify where your fear is coming from, it will help you to deal with it more effectively. Is this expectation realistic? Is it coming from someone else or society at large? Or is this something that originates within yourself? Further inquiry into these questions will reveal the root of the problem.

4. Understand what motivates you to keep going

When you know why you want to accomplish something, it keeps you motivated and on track. Sometimes understanding your motivation means setting personal and professional goals related to your company or career. But don't forget about the less "tangible" reasons for working hard, such as the intrinsic rewards of being of service to others or helping them solve a problem.

5. Learn from other women

It's important to surround yourself with strong female role models, whether it's your mom, older sister, or grandma -- even if they don't have what you want yet! When you learn from the wisdom of other women who are succeeding in their personal and professional lives, it builds your confidence that you can do it too. Remember that these women didn't succeed overnight; they had to take action every single day in order to get where they are now. And if they can do it, so can you!

Bottom line:

You don't need to be afraid of failure, and these tips will help you deal with the fear of it. Remember that you can't achieve success without failing, and sometimes failing is precisely what we need in order to get ahead!
